Understanding emissions calculation methodology

Scope 1: Direct Emissions

These are direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, such as:

  • Natural gas combustion for heating
  • Diesel/fuel oil for generators
  • Refrigerant leakage from HVAC systems
  • Company-owned vehicles

Scope 2: Indirect Energy Emissions

These are emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling:

  • Purchased electricity
  • District heating and cooling
  • Market-based vs. location-based reporting

Scope 3: Value Chain Emissions

These include all other indirect emissions in a company's value chain:

  • Purchased goods and services
  • Capital goods (construction emissions)
  • Waste generated in operations
  • Employee commuting
  • Business travel
  • Tenant energy use (for landlords)
