Calculation Methodology
Understanding the methodologies and standards used for GHG emissions calculations.
Emissions Calculation Overview
Our platform uses internationally recognized standards and methodologies for GHG accounting
Standards and Protocols
All calculations in EcoProperty are based on the following international standards:
- GHG Protocol: The Greenhouse Gas Protocol provides comprehensive global standardized frameworks to measure and manage greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
- IPCC Guidelines: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change provides methodologies for estimating national greenhouse gas inventories.
- ISO 14064: International standard for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals.
Basic Calculation Approach
The basic formula for calculating GHG emissions is:
GHG Emissions = Activity Data × Emission Factor
- Activity Data: Quantified measurement of activity (e.g., kWh of electricity, gallons of fuel)
- Emission Factor: Amount of greenhouse gases emitted per unit of activity
Global Warming Potentials (GWP)
Different greenhouse gases have different warming effects. GWP values allow us to compare the impact of different gases:
| Greenhouse Gas | GWP (100-year) | Common Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) | 1 | Combustion, electricity |
| Methane (CH₄) | 28 | Natural gas leakage, waste |
| Nitrous Oxide (N₂O) | 265 | Fertilizers, combustion |
| HFCs (e.g., R-410A) | 1,430-4,000+ | Refrigeration, air conditioning |
GWP values are based on IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6)
Accuracy and Continuous Improvement
We regularly update our emission factors and calculation methodologies to ensure the most accurate results. Our platform follows the GHG Protocol principles of relevance, completeness, consistency, transparency, and accuracy.
